Places of Interest in Mosgiel

Known as the ‘pearl of the plain,’ Mosgiel, a green peaceful urban satellite town, lies at the north-eastern end of the Taieri Plains in the lee of the distinctively shaped Saddle Hill landmark. Just 15 kilometres over the hills from Dunedin and a fifteen minute drive from Dunedin International Airport (Momona), the area with its rivers and glens is easy to explore by car or bike. Tunnel Beach, Brighton and Ocean View beaches lie on the eastern side of Saddle Hill. Outram is an ideal picnic spot whilst to the west, the Maungatua Ranges provide a gateway via Middlemarch to the Maniototo and the Otago Rail Trail.

Mosgiel’s history is interwoven with the agricultural industry. Arthur Burns’ woollen mill closed at the end of the 20th century but Invermay agricultural research centre continues the farming link. The township offers cafes and an extensive shopping and service area.
