Midwinter Carnival
This year's 2017 event will be held in Dunedin, New Zealand, on Saturday 24th June with the theme Nocturnal Nature!
The Mid-Winter Carnival is a local celebration of winter utilising art and performance to create a unique and spectacular event. Every year the event grows, with last year's turnout of over 15,000 people being the most ever.
The highlight of the event is the Carnival Procession which includes more than 1000 people and 100s of lanterns. A special feature is the giant lanterns, costumed stilt walkers, dancers and musicians. Each year we have a new theme and the Carnival Art Team interprets this to create new exciting art works for people to enjoy.
Family lantern making workshops are held on the three weekends prior to the event and over 100 volunteers re involved helping with preparations and on the night of the event. Visit our Workshops and Volunteer pages to get involved!
